The vineyards of Alsace

The vineyards of Alsace spread over 170 kilometers, representing 15,000 hectares of vines planted on hillsides, from Thann (in the Haut-Rhin department) to Marlenheim (in the Bas-Rhin department). The vineyard is located at the foot of the Vosges Mountains and benefits from a temperate, semi- continental climate, crossing nearly 120 Alsatian communes. Protected by the massif, it is not affected by oceanic influences, which ensures minimal rainfall and ideal sunshine for maturation. Planted on various soils, Alsatian wines benefit from 4 types of appellations: AOP Alsace, AOP Alsace Grand Cru, “Vendanges Tardives” and finally “Sélection de Grains Nobles”. In these appellations, white wine dominates, representing 70% of the production. Numerous grape varieties are planted, including the best known: Riesling, king of the region and cultivated as a noble grape variety giving wines concentrated in sugar, Muscat offering a light wine, Gewurztraminer offering a wide range of aromas (white flowers, yellow and exotic fruits, spices...) and finally Pinot Blanc offering balanced wines. For red wines, only Pinot Noir is used, creating structured wines with great ageing potential. As a supplier of great terroir wines and sparkling wines (Crémant d'Alsace), Alsace wines can satisfy all palates!
