What should you compare between Clos Jebsal 2020 and Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2021?

Appearance: Pale yellow with golden highlights.
Nose: Aromatic, revealing notes of white-fleshed fruits, candied citrus, and white flowers.
Palate: Round and elegant with a nice length, accompanied by subtle minerality that balances the wine's richness.

These two wines offer an opportunity to discover two Pinot Gris cuvées from Zind Humbrecht. They are also from different vintages, so a comparative tasting will not allow you to attribute their differences solely to their place of origin.

Does Clos Jebsal carry the same appellation as Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rangen de Thann?

No: Clos Jebsal 2020 is presented under the Alsace appellation, without a Grand Cru designation, unlike Rangen de Thann "Clos Saint Urbain" 2021. They offer two distinct ways to explore the estate's Pinot Gris, although this difference in classification alone is not enough to predict which one you will prefer.

Is this Clos Jebsal a good choice if I want to discover a grape variety other than Riesling?

Yes, it offers a chance to explore Pinot Gris while staying with Zind Humbrecht. However, when comparing it with a Riesling Clos Windsbuhl or Heimbourg 2021, bear in mind that the grape variety, cuvée and vintage all change at the same time.

What kind of themed tasting would Clos Jebsal 2020 fit into?

It could be included in a tasting exploring grape varieties from Alsace, alongside the estate's Muscat Grand Cru Goldert 2021 and Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2021. The idea is to compare several grape varieties from the same producer, rather than focusing solely on different appellations.

Is this a good bottle to give to a Pinot Gris enthusiast?

It is a suitable option if you know the person would like to discover Zind Humbrecht's Pinot Gris wines. However, knowing only the grape variety is not enough to guarantee that they will find the specific style they enjoy, so it is best to take into account the cuvées they already know as well.
