The grape varieties of Burgundy

In Burgundy, as you can see, two grape varieties dominate :

Chardonnay

(Yes, there are more white wines than red wines in Burgundy!)

Pinot Noir

Aligoté and Gamay are also among the main grape varieties grown in Burgundy. Burgundy is the birthplace of these four grape varieties. The clay-limestone soils, which are the most common type of soil here, allow these grape varieties to express themselves in an original and authentic way.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in Burgundy thus offer expressions of minerality that are unique in the world.

The different grape varieties

le pinot noir

Refined and iconic, Pinot Noir is the soul of great red wines. It accurately reveals the identity of the terroirs, particularly in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions. Its aromas of cherry, raspberry, violet, and undergrowth evolve elegantly over time. Made for aging, it produces wines that are both refined and deep.

Gamay

The jewel of southern Burgundy, Gamay produces fruity, supple, and convivial red wines, particularly in the Mâconnais region and regional appellations such as Passe-Tout-Grains. Strawberry, redcurrant, and sweet spices make up its generous and accessible aromatic profile.

Often overshadowed by Chardonnay, Aligoté is making a comeback thanks to its straightforward, well-crafted wines. It shines particularly brightly in Bouzeron, with its natural liveliness, lemony notes, and beautiful tension. An ideal wine for aperitifs or fresh, seafood-based dishes.

Chardonnay

Aligoté

A white grape variety par excellence, it expresses all its richness depending on the terroir. In Chablis, it is tense and mineral. In the Côte de Beaune, it gains volume and complexity. In the Mâconnais, it is more sunny and indulgent. Aromas of white flowers, citrus, dried fruit and butter intertwine with finesse depending on the ageing process.
