Vin de France Blanc "L'Eléphant Blanc" 2023
A Family Estate Rooted in the Lot Terroir
Founded in 1901 and passed down through generations, Domaine Combel-la-Serre is now led by Julien Ilbert and his wife Sophie. Located in Cahors, this family-run estate embodies the new wave of the appellation, offering precise, modern, and elegant wines. In just a few years, Combel-la-Serre has become a must-know for those seeking authentic Malbecs, vinified with respect and finesse.
A Vineyard on the Limestone Heights of the Causse
The estate spans 23 hectares of vineyards located at 300 meters altitude on the limestone soils of the Causse. This unique geological feature imparts remarkable minerality and freshness to the wines, contrasting with the traditional image of powerful and tannic Cahors wines. The flagship grape variety is Malbec (or Côt), covering 22 hectares, accompanied by one hectare of Vermentino for rare and refined white wines.
A Total Commitment to Organic Farming
Since 2013, Julien and Sophie Ilbert have converted the entire estate to organic farming, obtaining official certification in 2015. They prioritize soil-friendly practices, eliminating pesticides and synthetic inputs. This approach produces vibrant and sincere wines that accurately reflect the Lot terroir. Hand harvesting ensures optimal grape selection and total respect for the fruit.
Natural Vinifications for Wines with Identity
In the cellar, vinifications focus on preserving Malbec’s natural expression. Fermentations occur with indigenous yeasts, and gentle extractions prevent excessive concentration. Depending on the cuvée, the wines are aged in concrete tanks, large oak vats, or old barrels, always aiming for finesse and balance. Unlike the rustic Cahors of the past, Combel-la-Serre’s wines stand out for their freshness and drinkability.
Flagship Cuvées Representing the New Cahors
The estate offers a range of wines showcasing different expressions of Malbec. "Le Pur Fruit du Causse" is an accessible and juicy version, featuring crunchy black fruits and a bright mineral edge. "Le Lac aux Cochons," more structured, reveals a broad and spicy palate, perfect for aging. "Au Cerisier" comes from a specific plot, producing a deeper and more refined Cahors with complex notes of cherry and cocoa.
Domaine Combel-la-Serre, a Reference for Modern Malbec
With a rigorous approach and a philosophy centered on fruit purity, Domaine Combel-la-Serre has emerged as a leading name in Cahors. Its wines, both elegant and sincere, appeal to a wide audience seeking authentic emotions. Tasting a Combel-la-Serre wine is an invitation to discover a new side of Malbec, where freshness and finesse replace heaviness and over-extraction. A must-follow estate for lovers of great wines from South-West France.
