A family heritage in the heart of Burgundy

Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is deeply rooted in Burgundy's winemaking history. Founded by Michel Esmonin, the estate was taken over by his daughter Sylvie in 1990, following her oenology studies in Dijon and experience as a consultant. Upon her return, Sylvie began bottling the entire production under the family name, marking a new chapter for the domaine.

A prestigious 7.8-hectare vineyard

The estate spans 7.8 hectares, including notable parcels such as:

  • Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru: 1.7 hectares located just behind the family home, considered one of the finest premier crus in the appellation.
  • Gevrey-Chambertin: 4.4 hectares across multiple plots, offering a diversity of terroirs and aromatic profiles.
  • Volnay-Santenots: 0.2 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, adding a unique dimension to the range.

Most of the vines are old, planted by Sylvie's grandfather and father, imparting remarkable depth and complexity to the wines.

Organic and respectful viticulture

Committed to sustainability, Sylvie Esmonin has practiced organic viticulture for over 20 years, though not certified. She emphasizes manual interventions and limits chemical use, promoting biodiversity and soil health. This philosophy results in authentic wines that truly express their terroirs.

Winemaking blending tradition and innovation

In the cellar, Sylvie employs a flexible approach, adjusting destemming based on the cuvée and vintage. For instance, the Bourgogne Rouge is typically 90% destemmed, while the Clos Saint-Jacques may include up to 70% whole clusters. Fermentations occur in open wooden vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood varying by cuvée, reaching 75% for the Clos Saint-Jacques. This blend of traditional and modern techniques yields balanced wines that faithfully reflect their origin.
