A History Dating Back to the 12th Century
Clos de la Perrière, located in Fixin, Côte de Nuits, was founded in 1142 by Cistercian monks from Cîteaux. Recognizing the exceptional potential of this terroir, they planted vines that have endured for centuries. In 1853, the Joliet family acquired this unique 5-hectare monopole, carrying forward a long-standing winemaking tradition. Today, Bénigne Joliet, the sixth generation of the family, ensures the preservation and refinement of this heritage while integrating modern and sustainable techniques.
An Exceptional Terroir for Outstanding Wines
Clos de la Perrière is characterized by a complex mix of limestone, clay, and marl soils, giving the wines remarkable depth and complexity. With its ideal exposure and altitude, the terroir allows for the perfect maturation of Pinot Noir, producing wines of great finesse, balance, and elegance. The vines, aged between 40 and 90 years, are meticulously tended to fully express the uniqueness of each vintage.
A Sustainable and Precise Approach to Viticulture
Domaine Joliet practices sustainable viticulture, minimizing chemical inputs and prioritizing manual work. Herbicides are avoided in favor of regular plowing to oxygenate the soil and encourage deep root growth. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, ensuring rigorous grape selection and optimal quality from the very start.
Meticulous Winemaking for Elegant and Refined Wines
Each parcel within Clos de la Perrière is vinified separately to preserve the unique character of each terroir. After a controlled fermentation with indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in French oak barrels for 24 to 36 months, with approximately 15% new oak to maintain a balance between fruit expression and subtle oak influence. This extended aging process allows the wines to develop impressive aromatic complexity and depth.
Wines Recognized for Their Elegance and Aging Potential
Domaine Joliet’s wines, particularly the Fixin Premier Cru "Clos de la Perrière," have earned critical acclaim for their finesse and depth. With aromas of red and black fruits, enhanced by floral and spicy notes, they feature a delicate tannic structure and a long, persistent finish. Their excellent aging potential allows them to evolve beautifully over the years, offering an increasingly refined tasting experience. Each vintage reflects the expertise and passion that have driven the estate for more than a century.
A Family Estate Looking to the Future
Under the leadership of Bénigne Joliet and his daughter Camille, the estate remains committed to preserving and enhancing its unique heritage. While honoring Burgundy’s traditions, Domaine Joliet continues to integrate environmentally friendly innovations and seeks to further refine the expression of Clos de la Perrière. With this dedication, the estate ensures the longevity and excellence of its wines for generations to come, continuing to write the history of this remarkable Burgundy monopole.
