Founded in 1966 in Epfig, at the foothills of the Vosges mountains, the Ostertag estate has become a cornerstone of Alsace winemaking. Led by André Ostertag for over four decades, the family-run winery developed a distinct identity, blending deep respect for terroir with a spirit of innovation. Since 2018, his son Arthur has taken over, continuing his father’s legacy with the same passion and commitment to biodynamic viticulture. The result is a collection of wines that stand out for their elegance, energy, and their ability to showcase the unique character of Alsace’s diverse terroirs.
A trailblazer in Alsace, André Ostertag converted the estate to biodynamics in 1997, believing that wine should be the purest expression of its terroir. The vineyards are cultivated with a holistic approach, fostering the natural balance of the soil and vines. Chemical treatments are entirely avoided, replaced by plant-based preparations and lunar cycle guidance. This philosophy ensures grapes of exceptional quality, resulting in wines that are vibrant, precise, and deeply mineral-driven.
The Ostertag estate spans over 40 hectares, covering some of the finest sites in the region. Among them, the Grand Cru Muenchberg, with its rare volcanic soils, produces wines of striking depth and intensity. Other sites, such as Fronholz and Zellberg, contribute cuvées with a bold, yet harmonious profile, balancing tension and richness. Vinification is kept as natural as possible, with aging in large oak casks and barrels, lending the wines a silky texture and an extraordinary purity of aroma.
The wines of Ostertag are renowned for their perfect balance between precision and expressiveness. The estate’s Riesling is sharp and refined, showcasing citrus notes, flinty minerality, and a saline-driven finish. The Pinot Gris, handled with great subtlety, reveals a complex aromatic palette of ripe fruit, spices, and a signature smoky touch. Unlike heavier versions of the grape, Ostertag’s Gewurztraminer is vinified with finesse, offering delicate floral aromas and remarkable freshness. The estate also produces exquisite Pinot Noir wines, known for their silk-like tannins and impressive depth, proving that Alsace is capable of crafting truly elegant reds.
Through visionary winemaking and meticulous craftsmanship, the Ostertag estate has established itself as one of Alsace’s most prestigious producers. Sought after by wine lovers and featured on the finest restaurant wine lists worldwide, these wines perfectly embody the harmony between nature and expertise. Tasting an Ostertag wine is an invitation to experience a unique fusion of finesse and intensity, revealing the full potential of Alsace’s remarkable terroirs.
