A historic and vibrant grape variety
Gamay is a black grape with white juice, primarily grown in southern Burgundy, notably in the Mâconnais and Saône-et-Loire. Though banned from the Côte d'Or since the 14th century, it has flourished on more suitable terroirs, producing fresh, fruit-forward and juicy red wines full of charm.
Where Gamay thrives in Burgundy
In Burgundy, Gamay features prominently in appellations like Bourgogne Passe-Tout-Grains (a blend with Pinot Noir), Bourgogne Gamay (for high-quality 100% Gamay cuvées), and other regional and southern village wines. These wines often undergo whole-cluster or semi-carbonic fermentation, emphasizing their expressive and generous nature.
A wine of pure pleasure
Gamay wines from Burgundy are known for their freshness, bright fruitiness and easy-drinking character. Expect notes of cherry, raspberry and peony. They’re ideal for casual enjoyment, especially when served slightly chilled, and appreciated for their juicy palate and smooth tannins.
Food pairings with Burgundy Gamay
Burgundy Gamay pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, grilled poultry, quiches, soft cheeses and vegetarian dishes. Its light body makes it a versatile red wine—perfect for aperitifs or relaxed meals with friends and family.
