Alsace and Jura wines: two distinctive French regions
In eastern France, Alsace and Jura offer two highly distinctive interpretations of French wine, shaped by diverse terroirs and strong regional identities. Alsace is especially renowned for precise, aromatic white wines, while the Jura stands out for an extraordinary range of styles, from fresh topped-up whites to wines traditionally aged under a veil of yeast. Both regions offer fascinating discoveries for wine lovers seeking authenticity and a strong sense of place.
Terroirs with a remarkable sense of identity
The vineyards of Alsace feature an exceptional geological mosaic and numerous microclimates, allowing wines to express their origins with remarkable clarity. The prestigious Alsace Grand Cru vineyards are among the finest examples of this terroir-driven philosophy. In the Jura, hillsides combining marl and limestone contribute to wines with distinctive tension and personality, particularly in appellations such as Arbois, Côtes du Jura and Château-Chalon.
Riesling, Savagnin, Chardonnay and local varieties
In Alsace, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir create an exceptionally varied range of wines. The Jura is associated with five key grape varieties: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. Together they produce everything from mineral dry whites and delicate reds to sparkling wines and highly individual cuvées shaped by traditional ageing techniques.
From dry white wines to Vin Jaune
Alsace wines range from crisp, dry and mineral styles to richer, intensely aromatic expressions, alongside Crémant d’Alsace and late-harvest wines. In the Jura, Chardonnay and Savagnin produce wonderfully fresh topped-up whites as well as complex wines aged under a veil of yeast. The legendary Vin Jaune, made from Savagnin, remains one of the most original and recognisable expressions of the Jura vineyard.
Outstanding wines for food pairing
With their freshness and aromatic complexity, Alsace and Jura wines are exceptionally versatile at the table. Riesling and Crémant pair beautifully with fish, seafood and many Asian dishes, while Pinot Noir and Trousseau complement poultry and delicate meats. A Jura Vin Jaune is famously suited to aged Comté cheese, walnuts and mushroom-based dishes. Explore our selection and discover the diversity of these remarkable French wine regions.
