Two neighbouring appellations of legendary prestige
Located on the right bank of the Rhône River, between Vienne and Ampuis, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie represent two masterful expressions of the Northern Rhône Valley. While Condrieu is exclusively dedicated to white wines made from Viognier, Côte-Rôtie is the stronghold of Syrah, sometimes blended with a small amount of Viognier. These two appellations combine historical richness, steep hillside vineyards, and distinctive styles.
Spectacular terroirs shaped by geology
The steep slopes of Côte-Rôtie, reaching gradients of up to 60%, lie on schist and mica-schist soils, notably in the famous areas of Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. In Condrieu, vineyards flourish on granite and sandy soils, lending the wines their signature finesse. These demanding terrains require meticulous manual work, which contributes directly to the outstanding quality of the wines.
A climate made for characterful wines
The continental climate with Mediterranean influences ensures optimal ripeness for the grapes. Hot summers and cold winters, moderated by the Rhône River, promote aromatic concentration and natural acidity. This unique climate allows Syrah to express its full power in Côte-Rôtie wines, while Viognier reveals its floral and fruity aromatic complexity in Condrieu.
Age-worthy and gastronomic wines
Côte-Rôtie red wines are celebrated for their elegance, silky tannins, and complex aromas of dark fruits, violet, spices, and sometimes leather. These are wines for ageing. Condrieu whites, round and rich, charm with notes of apricot, white peach, orange blossom, and occasionally honey. Best enjoyed young, some vintages develop greater depth over time.
Elegant food and wine pairings
A Condrieu pairs beautifully with delicate dishes such as poultry with morels, roasted lobster, or aged goat cheese. A Côte-Rôtie will elevate game with sauce, duck breast, or aged beef. These two appellations deliver intense tasting experiences that reflect a truly exceptional winegrowing heritage.
