What is Estate du Monteillet and why is it unique
Estate du Monteillet, located in Chavanay in the Northern Rhône, has been run by the Montez family for generations. Today, it is led by Stéphane Montez, a passionate and dynamic winemaker who oversees more than 40 hectares across Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and IGP Collines Rhodaniennes. The estate blends traditional hand-farming on steep granite and schist slopes with modern, precise winemaking. Each parcel is treated with care to bring out the individuality of the terroir, resulting in wines that are expressive, balanced and full of energy.
Which grape varieties are grown at Estate du Monteillet
Syrah is the main red grape, planted across Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie, delivering wines of mineral depth and spice. For whites, Viognier thrives in Condrieu, while Marsanne and Roussanne contribute to Saint-Joseph blanc and some IGP cuvées. Vines are grown on steep terraces and farmed with natural practices, avoiding chemical herbicides. Vinification is parcel-based, using a mix of traditional methods and modern tools—stainless steel, barrels, amphora and concrete eggs—depending on the desired style of each wine.
What wine style defines Estate du Monteillet
Monteillet wines are known for their intensity, precision and elegance. The Syrah reds are layered with black fruit, violet, pepper and mineral tension, supported by fine tannins and freshness. They are structured yet graceful. The whites are full-bodied and complex, with notes of apricot, white flowers, stone fruit and spice, but remain lifted and energetic. The Condrieu in particular stands out for its purity and persistence. These are wines that age beautifully but are also charming young.
What food pairings go well with wines from Estate du Monteillet
The reds pair perfectly with grilled meats, roast lamb, mushroom-based dishes or gently spiced sauces. Their elegance also allows for pairings with refined vegetarian or Middle Eastern cuisine. The whites—especially Condrieu—match wonderfully with lobster, creamy risottos, poultry in sauce, or soft-rind cheeses. These are gastronomic wines with both presence and drinkability.
Why are wines from Estate du Monteillet so appreciated
Because they reflect both the vibrancy of their winemaker and the grandeur of their terroirs. Stéphane Montez has created a domaine that honors tradition while embracing innovation, delivering expressive and authentic wines with clarity and depth. Loved by sommeliers and collectors alike, Monteillet wines offer a powerful yet precise interpretation of the Northern Rhône’s finest appellations.
