Anjou Rouge "Cuvée Violette" 2021
What is Clau de Nell and why is it unique
Clau de Nell is a biodynamic estate located in Ambillou-Château, in Anjou Noir, a region marked by schist, sandstone and tuffeau soils. In 2008, the estate was revived by Anne-Claude Leflaive, the iconic Burgundian winemaker and biodynamic pioneer, who brought her philosophy and vision to the Loire. Since her passing, the estate continues to be guided by her values, with a dedicated team that honors her legacy. Clau de Nell embodies a philosophy where living soils, balance and authenticity are at the core of every wine produced.
Which grape varieties are grown at Clau de Nell
The estate focuses on Loire’s noble red varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grolleau and a small amount of Chenin Blanc. All grapes are cultivated biodynamically, with old, deeply rooted vines producing low yields and intense fruit. Each variety is vinified separately, aiming to express its personality with clarity and restraint. Manual harvesting and meticulous sorting ensure only the best fruit reaches the cellar, where it is gently guided into becoming wines that truly speak of place.
What wine style defines Clau de Nell
The wines are deep yet remarkably elegant, with structure balanced by freshness and a refined expression of fruit. The reds are aged in used barrels to preserve nuance, resulting in wines with fine tannins, mineral tension and layered complexity. They are never heavy or overripe, but focused, energetic and long. The Chenin Blanc, though produced in small quantities, is taut and textural, combining tension and purity in a dry, precise style. Each wine is a singular reflection of its vintage and site, shaped with care and without manipulation.
What food pairings go well with wines from Clau de Nell
The Cabernet Francs pair beautifully with roast lamb, grilled red meats, wild mushroom risotto or stews. Their freshness also makes them perfect for dishes featuring root vegetables, lentils or eggplant. Grolleau offers a softer, more delicate red, ideal for poultry or bistro-style dishes. The Chenin Blanc pairs seamlessly with refined seafood, goat cheese or seasonal vegetable dishes. These wines invite thoughtful, ingredient-driven cuisine that echoes the estate’s respect for balance and purity.
Why are wines from Clau de Nell so appreciated
Clau de Nell stands out for its integrity, biodynamic philosophy and emotional depth. As a living legacy of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate reflects both tradition and innovation. Its wines are soulful, elegant and alive, crafted with a commitment to truth and respect for the land. They appeal to thoughtful wine lovers, sommeliers and those seeking wines that go beyond technique to deliver something real and lasting.
