A Family Estate Dedicated to Malbec
Château du Cèdre is a benchmark in the Cahors appellation. Founded in 1973 by Charles Verhaeghe, the estate is now led by his sons, Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. With a modern vision rooted in tradition, they have elevated the estate among the greatest names in South-Western France, championing the region’s emblematic grape variety: Malbec.
An Exceptional Terroir of Limestone and Gravel
The vineyard spans 27 hectares, spread across three distinct soil types characteristic of Cahors. The clay-limestone terraces lend minerality and aromatic finesse, while the gravelly and sandy soils contribute depth and structure. This geological diversity allows for the crafting of balanced, powerful, and elegant wines that faithfully express the identity of the Lot region.
A Strong Commitment to Organic Farming
As pioneers in the region, Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe began their organic conversion in the 1990s, achieving official certification in 2012. The vines are cultivated without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, using sustainable practices that preserve soil health and biodiversity. This natural approach ensures healthy, concentrated grapes, resulting in authentic and expressive wines.
Precise Winemaking and Meticulous Aging
In the cellar, winemaking is carried out with an unwavering focus on excellence. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and gentle extractions preserve the finesse of the fruit. The wines are then aged in oak barrels or concrete vats, depending on the cuvée, refining their structure and adding complexity. This balance of tradition and innovation yields deep, harmonious wines with impressive aging potential.
Iconic Cuvées Showcasing Malbec
Château du Cèdre offers a range of cuvées highlighting different expressions of Malbec. "Le Cèdre," the estate’s flagship wine, is a powerful yet refined Cahors, aged for two years in large oak casks, revealing notes of black fruits, spices, and elegant tannins. "GC," crafted from the estate’s oldest vines, is an exceptional wine, concentrated and structured, with remarkable aging potential. The "Cèdre Héritage" cuvée provides a more approachable style, with bright fruit and a supple texture.
Château du Cèdre, a Modern Benchmark in Cahors
Through its commitment to quality and precise work in both vineyard and cellar, Château du Cèdre embodies the excellence of modern Cahors wines. Its cuvées, acclaimed by enthusiasts and critics alike, are found on prestigious tables and showcase the immense potential of Malbec in this unique terroir.
