A Family Legacy in the Heart of Burgundy
Méo-Camuzet Estate traces its origins back to the early 20th century, when Étienne Camuzet, then a deputy of the Côte d'Or, acquired parcels in Burgundy’s most prestigious vineyards. A passionate viticulturist, he assembled an extraordinary estate, including holdings in the famed Clos de Vougeot. Upon his passing in 1946, his daughter Maria Noirot-Camuzet inherited the estate. Without direct heirs, she entrusted it to her nephew, Jean Méo, in 1959. Despite his political career, Jean Méo was committed to preserving the family’s winemaking heritage, relying on talented sharecroppers, including the legendary Burgundy vigneron Henri Jayer.
A Shift Toward Excellence Under Jean-Nicolas Méo
In 1984, Jean Méo gradually passed the reins to his son, Jean-Nicolas Méo. With a background in business and oenology, Jean-Nicolas fully took over in 1989, determined to vinify under the Méo-Camuzet name. This marked a turning point, as the estate transitioned from sharecropping to direct winemaking, with a renewed focus on precision and excellence.
An Outstanding Terroir of Grand and Premier Crus
The estate now spans 17 hectares across some of Burgundy’s most revered appellations. Its Grand Crus include Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Corton, and Échezeaux, offering unparalleled complexity and depth. Complementing these are Premier Crus from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, adding further diversity to the estate’s remarkable portfolio. Each parcel is meticulously cultivated to fully express the essence of its terroir.
Meticulous Winemaking and Masterful Aging
Jean-Nicolas Méo follows a minimally interventionist approach, allowing each vineyard to speak for itself. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted at the vine. Depending on the vintage, whole-cluster fermentation is employed to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. The wines undergo 15 to 18 months of aging in oak barrels, with precise use of new wood, ranging from 50 to 100% depending on the cuvée. This method ensures a perfect balance between elegance and power.
Global Recognition and a Relentless Pursuit of Perfection
Under the leadership of Jean-Nicolas Méo, Méo-Camuzet Estate has become a benchmark for fine Burgundy wines. With remarkable depth and intensity, its wines captivate collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Constantly striving for excellence, the estate continues to refine its techniques, exploring new ways to elevate the purest expression of its exceptional terroirs.
