A contrasted yet promising year
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was shaped by climate contrasts. A mild yet unstable spring, followed by a stormy and hot summer, led to generous yields. Despite weather challenges, the vines adapted well, delivering a harvest of both volume and quality.
Weather conditions and sanitary pressure
Several intense summer storms – including an exceptional derecho on July 11 – affected certain vineyards. Downy mildew and powdery mildew posed threats but were generally well controlled. Thanks to warm weather, Pinot Noir ripened quickly, while Chardonnay occasionally struggled with heavy fruit load.
A dynamic growing cycle
From a delayed budbreak to a swift flowering and a slowed véraison due to heatwaves, 2023 was a vintage of extremes. Harvest began in early September, with notable variability across areas and grape varieties. Careful sorting was key to maintaining quality where rot or hail had impacted the vines.
Wine profiles: freshness, fruit, and structure
The first tastings reveal excellent balance, aromatic intensity, and freshness. Pinot Noirs show vibrant color, ripe tannins and expressive fruit. Chardonnays deliver tension and clarity, especially from early-ripening terroirs, with saline and precise profiles.
A vintage of recovery and optimism
After the already generous 2022 harvest, the 2023 vintage marks a rare back-to-back abundance in Burgundy. This offers both a chance to rebuild cellar stocks and to offer wines with character, depth, and ageing potential to wine lovers worldwide.
