What is Estate Belargus and why is it unique
Estate Belargus is a relatively recent project that has quickly become a leading name in the revival of Anjou’s great white wines. Located in and around Savennières, the estate showcases the complexity and richness of the Loire’s terroirs through an extremely precise, parcel-by-parcel approach. Inspired by Burgundy’s philosophy, each wine is made from a specific plot or historic cru, including classified terroirs such as Savennières, Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru and Coteaux du Layon Premier Cru Chaume. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with great care given to soil health and the surrounding ecosystem. Each wine is a vibrant and pure expression of its origin.
Which grape variety is grown at Estate Belargus
Chenin Blanc is the sole grape variety cultivated across the estate. This noble and demanding variety thrives on the schist, sand and sandstone soils found throughout Anjou. The estate produces a full spectrum of styles, from taut and mineral-driven dry whites to some of the most complex sweet wines in the region. Thanks to precise viticulture and harvests timed for optimal ripeness—sometimes with multiple passes through the vineyard—each vintage captures the essence of place and season. At Belargus, Chenin Blanc becomes a vector of emotion and a mirror of the landscape.
What wine style defines Estate Belargus
The wines are defined by their clarity, verticality and precision. The dry whites are pure, vibrant and deeply mineral, with outstanding length. The sweet wines, especially those from Quarts-de-Chaume or Chaume, offer an extraordinary balance of aromatic intensity, natural concentration and crystalline freshness. Vinification is gentle and low-intervention, with slow native fermentations and extended aging in large wooden vats or oval tanks. The goal is always to preserve the grape’s integrity and to let the site shine without any makeup or manipulation.
What are the ideal food pairings with wines from Estate Belargus
The dry wines are perfect with grilled fish, shellfish, elegant vegetarian dishes or aged goat cheeses. Their tension and structure also make them excellent matches for more refined cuisine such as truffled poultry or butter-based sauces. The sweet cuvées pair beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese or fruit-based desserts with restrained sweetness. Thanks to their precision and balance, these wines allow for refined and unexpected pairings at the table.
