Two major French wine regions with distinctive identities

Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley hold an important place in the French wine landscape. Extending south from Burgundy, these two regions produce very different styles while sharing a strong commitment to terroir and grape variety expression. Beaujolais is renowned for the finesse and vibrant fruit character of its Gamay wines, while the Rhône Valley offers remarkable diversity, from elegant northern Syrah to generous southern blends dominated by Grenache.

Diverse terroirs of granite, schist and rounded stones

Terroir is central to the personality of both regions. In Beaujolais, the granite soils of the northern crus produce precise, floral and structured wines, while the more clay-limestone areas further south often create softer, more immediately approachable styles. In the Rhône Valley, the geological diversity is particularly striking, with granite and schist around Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and stony terraces with famous rounded pebbles in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Limestone and clay are also widespread throughout the southern Rhône.

Gamay, Syrah and Grenache at the heart of the wines

Gamay is the signature grape of Beaujolais, producing wines with red-fruit, violet and sometimes spicy aromas. Styles range from lively, fruit-driven wines to complex bottles capable of ageing. In the northern Rhône Valley, Syrah dominates, creating refined, peppery and deeply flavoured reds. Further south, Grenache is commonly blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and other traditional varieties. White wines are also important, with Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Clairette playing key roles.

Iconic appellations from Beaujolais to the Rhône

Beaujolais is home to ten renowned crus, including Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Brouilly and Saint-Amour. Each reveals a different expression of Gamay and its terroir. The Rhône Valley includes prestigious appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras, alongside the more accessible Côtes du Rhône wines.

Versatile wines for the table

Wines from Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley offer excellent versatility with food. Fresh Beaujolais works beautifully with charcuterie, poultry and classic bistro dishes, while structured Morgon or Moulin-à-Vent pairs well with roast meats and slow-cooked dishes. Northern Rhône Syrah is a natural match for lamb, beef and game, whereas Grenache-based southern blends complement grilled meats, Provençal cuisine and spiced dishes. Rhône whites are particularly well suited to fish, creamy poultry dishes and mature cheeses.
