The Aloxe-Corton appellation
The Aloxe-Corton appellation, located in the Côte de Beaune, is famous for its powerful, complex wines. Unique in Burgundy, it produces both red wines, mainly from Pinot Noir, and white wines from Chardonnay, with several parcels classified as Grand Crus, including the famous Corton and Corton-Charlemagne.
Climate and Terroir of Aloxe Corton
The semi-continental climate of this region, with its hot summers and harsh winters, favors slow ripening of the grapes. The soils of the appellation are predominantly clay-limestone, with a significant presence of stones, bringing minerality and finesse to the wines. The gentle slopes of the Corton mountain provide excellent exposure to the sun, particularly for the grand crus.
Specificity of Aloxe Corton Wines
The red wines of Aloxe-Corton are distinguished by their marked tannic structure, aromas of red and black fruits, and spicy, undergrowth notes when mature. As they age, they gain in complexity and depth, offering notes of leather, licorice and truffle. Fewer white wines are known for their elegance, with aromas of dried fruit, honey and minerality.
