Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2021
What is Estate de Marcoux and why is it unique
Estate de Marcoux, based in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is a pioneering and respected domaine led by sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier. Their family’s winegrowing heritage dates back to the 14th century, and under their stewardship since the 1990s, the estate has become one of the region’s biodynamic trailblazers—certified since 1991. With a gentle, intuitive approach to both vineyard and cellar, they produce wines of transparency and elegance, from old-vine Grenache grown on galets roulés, sandy soils and clay. Marcoux offers a luminous, refined interpretation of this storied appellation.
Which grape varieties are grown at Estate de Marcoux
Grenache is the star of the reds, often from vines over 100 years old. Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and a touch of Counoise are used in blends depending on the cuvée. For whites, Clairette, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc are grown, producing a rare and elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. All parcels are vinified separately, with spontaneous fermentation and aging in concrete vats or demi-muids, tailored to each wine’s character.
What wine style defines Estate de Marcoux
Marcoux wines are defined by finesse, purity and vibrancy. The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape offers bright red fruit, garrigue herbs, subtle spice and a silky texture, with a structure that is present but never heavy. The “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée brings more depth and complexity while retaining that lifted balance. The white is floral, saline and energetic, with citrus, white flowers and a persistent, mineral finish. These are graceful wines, suitable for both aging and early enjoyment.
What food pairings go well with wines from Estate de Marcoux
The reds pair beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine: herb-roasted lamb, vegetable tagines, roast pigeon, or confit ratatouille. They also complement subtly spiced or plant-based dishes. The white is ideal with fine seafood, grilled fish, creamy poultry or spring vegetable risottos. These are gastronomic wines, expressive but harmonious, made to enhance a thoughtful meal.
Why are wines from Estate de Marcoux so appreciated
Because they capture the soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with grace and authenticity. With biodynamic farming, old vines and a deep sensitivity to place, the Armenier sisters create wines that are luminous, expressive and elegant. Highly sought after by sommeliers and collectors, Estate de Marcoux offers a timeless, feminine and soulful expression of the southern Rhône’s greatest terroirs.
