The De Sousa estate, located in the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs, has been a family-run operation for three generations. Founded by Manuel De Sousa, a Portuguese immigrant who arrived in France during World War I, the estate thrived under the leadership of his son Antoine and later his grandson Erick. Today, the family continues the tradition by producing champagnes that faithfully reflect the region's exceptional terroir.
Since 2010, the De Sousa estate has been certified organic, achieving Demeter biodynamic certification in 2013. This environmentally friendly approach includes the use of natural composts, soil tilling with horses to prevent compaction, and adherence to lunar cycles for vineyard work. These practices aim to enhance soil vitality and vine health, contributing to the pure expression of the terroir in every bottle.
De Sousa's vineyards are notable for the advanced age of their vines, many over 50 years old. These deep-rooted old vines draw nutrients and water from deep within the soil, imparting remarkable aromatic concentration and minerality to the grapes. The parcels are primarily located on Grand Cru-classified terroirs, notably in Avize, Cramant, and Oger, renowned for producing Chardonnays of great finesse.
The De Sousa champagne range includes several flagship cuvées. The Cuvée des Caudalies, a Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, is vinified in small oak barrels, offering aromatic complexity and a silky texture. The Cuvée 3A is a unique blend of grapes from the villages of Avize, Aÿ, and Ambonnay, combining the freshness of Chardonnay with the richness of Pinot Noir. Each cuvée is crafted with meticulous attention, reflecting the distinct character of its origin.
Through its commitment to quality and authenticity, Champagne De Sousa has gained worldwide acclaim. The estate's champagnes feature on the wine lists of Michelin-starred restaurants and are cherished by connoisseurs for their elegance, purity, and faithful representation of the Côte des Blancs terroir.
